Brief Introduction

Hokkaido University was founded in 1876, the nation’s first institute of higher education to award bachelor degrees, and is one of the oldest, largest and most prestigious universities in Japan. Currently, Hokkaido University has around 18,000 enrolled students with 12 undergraduate schools, 18 graduate schools and 26 research institutes and centers. The words “Be ambitious!” serve as Hokkaido University’s motto adopted from a speech given by our very first Vice-President Dr. William Clark. These immortal words, whether written in the pages of history texts or uttered amongst the youth of Japan continue to inspire generations. Our stunning main campus is located in downtown Sapporo, within walking distance of almost everything the beautiful city has to offer. With an additional campus in the coastal city of Hakodate, Hokkaido University is the frontier of real innovation in Northern Japan.

Education and Research Aim

Hokkaido University is proud to uphold four basic philosophies “The Frontier Spirit”, “Global Perspectives”, “All-round Education” and “Practical Learning”- philosophies which have evolved with the University over its history of more than 135 years. Under the four basic philosophies, the University has conducted pioneering education and research on the cutting edge and nurtured experts with knowledge, curious minds and new global perspectives, who are ready to embrace challenges and find solutions which change society for the better. Hokkaido University has produced alumni in various fields, including business leaders, research pioneers and even a Nobel laureate; Professor Emeritus Akira Suzuki won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2010.
