GMAT and GRE: the main exams to graduate degree, MBA, Masters and PhD abroad

Besides TOEFL and IELTS, there are two other important tests for those wishing to study abroad: the GMAT and the GRE. Both are meant for students who are considering applying for a graduate-level degree, especially a master’s program, in the United States or Europe.

The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is the oldest and best known. It is a basic requirement of most business schools for students who want to pursue an MBA. The Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) may be required both for students who intend to graduate with a degree, as well as those who want to do a Masters or PhD program abroad.

GMAT
The exam is divided into 4 parts: Quantitative (37 questions), Verbal (41 questions), Integrated reasoning (12 issues) and Analytical writing assessment. A total of 90 questions and an essay.

The difficulty level depends on the candidate's performance. At the beginning, the computer will assume that every test taker is equal and will start with a mid-range question. A correct answer will lead to a more difficult question, while an incorrect answer does the opposite. Harder questions, gives you more points. Watch out if you are finding it too simple to test.

The GMAT costs $250 and lasts 3 hours and 30 minutes. The overall score ranges from 200 to 800 points and the writing from 0 to 6. Students can take the test up to five times every 12 months and it is valid for five years.

GRE
The test is divided into 3 parts: analytical writing, verbal reasoning and quantitative reasoning. As well as the GMAT, the difficulty level of the questions varies according to the performance of each test taker. The highest score of the two readings is 6 and the other two parts of the test is 170 each.

The assessment can be done in two ways: general or focused in specific subjects. The general test assesses verbal, logical and quantitative reasoning capacity according to global issues. Whereas the particular test is a writing assessment and can be focused on specific subjects in the following fields: Biochemistry and Molecular and Cellular Biology, Biology, Math, Chemistry, Physics, English Literature and Psychology. Keep an eye on what kind of evidence the institution you want to study requires.

The validity of the examination is 5 years and it can be done via computer or paper. Therefore, you will only be able to take the GRE paper-based if you live in a country where there are not enough technological resources to take the exam through a computer. The time can range from 3 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours 45 minutes (if you make the printed version) and the cost is US$195.
