Santa Barbara, California - the American Riviera

Santa Barbara is famed for being one of the most beautiful places to live, not just in the United States, but in the world. The views are astounding. The weather is near-exemplary, all year round. The people are enthusiastic and easy-going. UCSB students can even learn to surf, with the beach just a short distance away.

With a mediterranean climate and over 300 days of sunshine per year, Santa Barbara is pleasure defined.

Santa Barbara Marina

When choosing where to study abroad, it may seem as though there are a million places to choose from, but when it comes to warm, comforting, safe cities that also offer world class education, there are few options better than Santa Barbara. In 2019, The New York Times even ranked it the third best place to visit in the world.

Santa Barbara has a unique look and feel in part thanks to its Spanish-revival architecture, which occupies a lot of the city. There are no big high rises, for example. This careful planning and design also extends to the city’s transportation, which is better for walking and cycling than driving.

There is also plenty of culture for students in Santa Barbara to enjoy. It has a wonderful downtown with several theatres, art galleries, museums and is also the home of famous Santa Barbara Film Festival held in January. And of course, if you ever wish to explore further, Los Angeles is only a little more than an hour away.

Where Beauty Meets Brilliance

While the city is fun and enjoyable, it is also important to take advantage of UCSB’s excellent academic resources. UCSB is ranked as the 5th best public university in the United States and 24th university in the world (U.S. News & World Reports), and you can experience it’s world class academic environment as a visiting student.
