NMMI serves the educational needs of an international student population; young men and women from around the world here forge their character based on values such as duty, honor, and achievement in an environment of military discipline. They learn to be better human beings and face the future with a level of intellectual, academic and physical qualities with respect for others, leadership and self-confidence. The Institute has strict admissions standards that yearly result in an enrollment of approximately 1,000 students from 45 states and U.S. territories (Puerto Rico and American Samoa) and 34 international nations.

In what has been described as the ‘Most Beautiful Military School’ in the United States, and a campus that is on the National Register of Historic Places, New Mexico Military Institute thrives on developing young men and women in an exceptional setting.

Academically Formidable

Founded in 1891 and located the small, quiet, yet renowned city of Roswell, New Mexico, USA, the New Mexico Military Institute (NMMI) is recognised as one of the foremost options for students to learn focus and develop leadership skills and habits. NMMI offers a rich history and tradition of educating tomorrow’s leaders through a program of strong, challenging academics, leadership preparation, and character development.

What separates NMMI from other educational institutions, public or private, is the education system based on military discipline; in the values of honor, duty, achievement and in the Honor Code. The New Mexico Military Institute uses the Leadership Learning Model to develop cadets, an integrated system that develops strong leadership, academic prowess and physical fitness skills.

NMMI grants High School diplomas and Associate of Arts and Associate of Science degrees. The Institute’s emphasis on the qualities of honor, integrity, and responsibility, contributes to its unique educational philosophy. Part of the manner in which these qualities are taught is via guardianship. Each cadet is assigned an academic advisor who monitors their progress, assists in getting the most out of the educational experience, and helps them identify and gain acceptance to a college or university of their choice.

In the last twelve years, cadets have maintained a score on the ACT (American College Test) higher than the average national results (approximately 1.8 million students take the ACT test every year as a requirement to enter universities). 99% percent of NMMI graduates complete their bachelor's and many with a master's or doctorate too. Its high completion rate earned NMMI second place among the 1,132 junior colleges in the US (CNN Money Magazine).

Approximately 10% of graduates enter military service as officers; the others follow their civil life. The Institute finds former students in the professional world (doctors, lawyers, dentists, politicians, professors), others managing their own companies, and creating progressive changes in their communities.

As a consequence of the Institute’s first-rate academic program, it has received the highest levels of accreditation for both divisions, including being accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and The Higher Learning Commission.

NMMI has been ranked #1 by the Boarding School Review or teachers with advanced degrees.

Sound in Body and Mind

As well as academic training, those at the New Mexico Military Institute believe in the importance of physical improvement. NMMI offers 25 sports and over 45 extracurricular  activities. All cadets participate in daily physical exercises, after school each day.

Sports scholarships are also available for college students (the State of New Mexico prohibits these types of awards for high school students). NMMI covers the cost for any transportation, food or any other expenses related to any physical activity at no cost to parents.

The Institute

NMMI is a land-grant institution, making it one of the few United States education institutions to be state-funded. For comparison, other land-grant institutions include Cornell University, MIT, the University of California and many other large universities.

Security for the cadets is a priority. Supervision is provided 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for each cadet, and is provided by the Institute’s police department, professionals who work with the Corps of Cadets (usually former military officers) as well as high-ranking cadets.

New Mexico Military Institute also has one of the largest endowments for boarding and as a consequence provides first-rate boarding facilities. It was ranked first by the Boarding School Review for Faculties with Advanced Degrees. It also has the largest endowment of all two-year schools, which enables NMMI to provide over $2M annually in scholarships and reduced tuition rate costs.

Developing the Leaders of Tomorrow

Leadership training is provided to all cadets at the college level, through the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) program, and at the high school level through the Junior ROTC program. The ROTC Program offers college cadets the opportunity to receive a commission in the U.S. Army through the 2-Year Early Commissioning Program. Cadets may pursue commissions in the U.S. Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marines through the Service Academy Preparatory Program.

NMMI graduates prove successful in every field of endeavor, business, industry, public service, education, the professions, or careers in the military. Surveys of graduating classes show consistently that 95% of NMMI graduates go on to complete a four-year degree at outstanding schools such as Penn State, Stanford, Rice, Cornell, University of Texas, Arizona State University, University of Colorado, and the nation’s Service Academies.
